Poll: Where will growth in mobile come from?
Will Android come to dominate the egaming market or can Windows 8 make an impact?
Mobile is marked as a key area for growth at any serious egaming operator and 32Red proved in its recent results how much of an impact it can have. But in such a nascent market with development costs so high it’s hard to know which mobile platform to focus your attentions on. Android may be the clear leader in terms of market penetration, but Apple is arguably a more valuable proposition to egaming operators. And what of Windows 8?
The launch of a new range of iPhones and the release of iOS 7 made headlines last week, while the release of Android KitKat only caused a stir due to its potential for a marketing tie-in. The new version of the Android operating system might have a more attention grabbing name, but there is no doubt the media is more fascinated by the latest iteration of the Apple operating system and the egaming sector is arguably in the same position.
With the ability to freely market on the Apple App Store and payments integrated much more smoothly on the iOS platform it’s been the dominant channel for mobile growth in the egaming sector to-date. But there is no denying the importance of Android with the cheaper, more customisable platform and the biggest platform in the UK at the present time. And while marketing on Android is harder, it is arguably more of an untapped market.
But aside from the big two, there is a third contender creeping up on the rails. The growth in Windows Mobile phones has taken many by surprise and a recent report said they accounted for 8.2% of smartphones across Europe and were gaining a strong foothold in the UK. With so few operators having products designed for the Windows Mobile platform could this present a real opportunity for growth?
