PokerStars tournament breaks world record
Tournament reaches cap of 200,000 players, more than 50,000 more than the previous record.
PokerStars was successful in its attempt to break the world record for the number of players in an online tournament, after last night’s $1 buy-in event attracted 200,000 entrants.
The previous record was 149,196, set by the same operator in 2009, but the 200,000 cap was reached long before the tournament began at 8.30pm GMT last night. The cap also meant that the $250,000 guaranteed prizepool represented an overlay of $50,000.
A number of players present at this week’s PokerStars-sponsored European Poker Tour event in Prague took part in the online tournament in the presence of Guinness World Records adjudicator Gaz Deaves, who presented the world record certificate to Team PokerStars pro and Olympic gold medallist Fatima Moreira de Melo (pictured).
After more than seven hours’ play, the tournament was won by an unknown Russian player with the username “sokoluk1991″.
